A crinoid crown from the Wenlock (Silurian) of Coalbrookdale, Shropshire, England Naturalis
Donovan, S.K.; Lewis, D.N..
The specific diversity of fossil crinoids from the Much Wenlock Limestone Formation at Dudley, Worcestershire, and in Shropshire differ by an order of magnitude. The latter are relatively depauperate and include only about six nominal species. Over 165 years ago, a specimen from Coalbrookdale, Shropshire, was identified as Cyathocrinites tuberculatus Miller (= the taxocrinid flexible Protaxocrinus tuberculatus (Miller)). This specimen, although indifferently preserved, is distinct from other Silurian crinoids of the British Isles and is described herein as a monobathrid camerate, Macrostylocrinus? jefferiesi sp. nov. This species has a moderately large, conical dorsal cup with at least 20 arms, broad primibrachials, a granular surface sculpture and no ray...

Business opportunities in local food supply chains: an investigation in England and Australia AgEcon
Pearson, David; Bailey, Alison P..
There is widespread support from Government, media and consumers for local food networks. The profile of local food buyers and their expectations has been explored and we have some knowledge of its social, economic and environmental contribution. This research contributes by exploring the structure and scope of local food activities. This paper reports on a one year scoping study that examined local food within two contrasting countries, England and Australia. It used a literature review and interviews with key stakeholders to identify the business opportunities that exist in this sector. In conclusion there are many more local food activities in England than in Australia. Further, at a national level in both countries it remains fragmented and confused....

Données sur l'écologie de l'estuaire du Tamar (Plymouth) OMA
Mommaerts, J.-P..
The estuary of the Tamar has been surveyed from March to September 1968. The distribution and the variation of temperature, salinity and major nutrients (phosphate, nitrate and silicate) has been studied and the connection with some water circulation features discussed. The distribution of the various groups of phytoplankton in the estuary has been investigated and a comparison with open sea data carried out.

Fish assemblages of European tidal marshes: a comparison based on species, families and functional guilds OMA
Mathieson, S.; Cattrijsse, A.; Costa, M.J.; Drake, P.; Elliot, M.; Gardner, J.; Marchand, J..
In considering the use of estuarine habitats by fish assemblages, alternative views of the assemblage are increasingly being explored, based on functional rather than taxonomic aspects. The allocation of all taxa to a number of functional guilds allows a description of fish assemblages in terms of vertical zonation, habitat preferences, including the substratum preference of benthic/demersal species, and dietary preferences. This paper presents the first comparison of the structure of the fish assemblages in the tidal marshes of 6 European estuaries (Bay of Cadiz, Spain; Mira, Portugal; Loire, France; Westerschelde, The Netherlands; Humber, UK; Forth, UK). Cluster analysis was used to compare the assemblages recorded in 29 tidal marsh and associated...

Human Sociogenetics Biol. Res.
Valenzuela,Carlos Y.
In three cities of Chile (Santiago, Valparaiso, Valdivia) the A allele and phenotype (ABO blood group) are more frequent in the higher socioeconomic strata (SES) and the O allele and phenotype are in the lower ones. This constitutes a structured sociogenetic cline (SGC). The B allele and phenotypes (B+AB) present a rather erratic or contradictory distribution among SES. This SGC was also found in England. The standard interpretation of the origin and maintenance of this SGC in Chile is founded on socio-ethno-historic-cultural and drift factors followed by socioeconomic assortative mating that has occurred since the origin of Chileans by the admixture of Europeans and Amerindians. This interpretation is insufficient to explain the coincidence of the cline...

Locomotory behaviour and functional morphology of Nematostella vectensis (Anthozoa: Actiniaria: Edwardsiidae): a contribution to a comparative study of burrowing behaviour in athenarian sea anemones Naturalis
Williams, R.B..
The locomotory behaviour and functional morphology of English populations of a small (<2 cm long), burrowing athenarian sea anemone, Nematostella vectensis Stephenson, 1935 (= N. pellucida Crowell, 1946), which lives in soft mud in salt marshes and creeks, are described. Objectives were to ascertain the specific stimuli and environmental conditions determining when and how locomotion is employed, and to assess survival values. Experimentation and anatomical examination revealed how anemones move, and their functional morphology was interpreted in a physiological context. Finally, locomotion, morphology and habitat were compared for several athenarian anemones, to ascertain what correlations there are, if any. Essential environmental conditions for N....

North Sea spawning grounds of the sole (<i>Solea solea</i>) located from the 1984 Belgian plankton survey OMA
Borremans, C..
During spring 1984 large ichthyoplankton surveys were performed to determine the spawning period and the spawning places of the sole in the Southern Bight of the North Sea. In March and April most eggs were found close to the Belgian coast and the coast of Brittany, which agrees with results of previous plankton surveys. In the second of the surveys, however, high densities were also found at stations about 50 km from the coast -in the open sea. An attempt is made to explain whether these early eggs were laid in the locality, contrary to what is normally accepted, or drifted there from the Belgian or the English coast.

On the unusual patterns of phosphate vertical distribution in the Tamar estuary OMA
Mommaerts, J.-P..
Chemical investigations in the Tamar estuary (Plymouth, Great Britain) have revealed marked variations of phosphate content in the water column. This pattern was usually not matched by that of salinity. The origin of the phenomenon and its possible use for the computation of the flushing time of the estuary are discussed.

Review of the family Halopterididae (Hydrozoa, Cnidaria) Naturalis
Schuchert, P..
All genera and species of the hydrozoan family Halopterididae are reviewed. Where material was available, species are described and figured and the extent of morphological variation is assessed as far as possible. The re-examined material includes samples from the Challenger, Siboga, and Galathea expeditions. Numerous types were re-examined and taxonomic revisions made where necessary. For several nominal species lectotypes are designated. Two new species are described: Antennella kiwiana from New Zealand and Halopteris platygonotheca, a wide spread species from the Indo-Pacific Ocean. Halopteris buskii var. peculiaris (Billard, 1913) is raised to species level as Halopteris peculiaris. Several species are sunk into synonymy: Plumularia balei Billard, 1911...

Using the politicized institutional analysis and development framework to analyze (adaptive) comanagement: farming and water resources in England Ecology and Society
Whaley, Luke; Department of Geography, Kings College London; lukewhaley1@gmail.com; Weatherhead, Edward K.; Cranfield Water Science Institute, Cranfield University; k.weatherhead@cranfield.ac.uk.
The challenge of managing water resources in England is becoming increasingly complex and uncertain, a situation reflected in many countries around the world. Cooperative and participatory forms of governance are now seen as one way of addressing this challenge. We investigated this assertion by focusing on five farmer irrigator groups in the low-lying east of England. The groups&#8217; relationship with water resources management was interpreted through the lens of comanagement, which over the past decade has increasingly merged with the field of adaptive management and related concepts that derive from resilience thinking and complex adaptive systems theory. Working within a critical realist paradigm, our analysis was guided by the politicized...
